Understanding Keywords for SEO Success

A keyword is rarely just a single word—it’s usually a phrase that people search for online.

Goal: Find many keywords with High Search Volume & Low Competition

What to do with Keywords?

Include them in your home page, blogs/articles, and any other page that you want consumers to see in Google (or Bing, etc.) search. Each page on your website should have a few keywords that it is trying to rank for. A page can have a small number of short-tail key words (one word or short phrase) and many more long-tail keywords. If you have multiple pages trying to rank for the same keywords, "keyword cannibalization" can occur and hurt your overall rankings.

Keyword importance

1. URL (subURLs, pages within pages, redirections)

    • Your domain is what's between https://www. and .com
      • Example: https://www.jellyfishlighting.com/
    • Subpages will be what goes after the .com/
      • Example: https://www.jellyfishlighting.com/blog/color-changing-outdoor-christmas-lights
      • Under our "blogs" page we have this blog "color-changing-outdoor-christmas-lights"
    • Make sure the URL and subURL have names with keywords that you want

2. Title tags (keyword first, brand second. Under 63 characters long

    • The title of your article/page should include the keyword that it is trying to rank for
    • If it is over 63 characters, then it will be cut-off when displayed on Google search

3. Header Tags (h1,h2,h3

    • In your page's text you will have subtitles or headers. They are coded different than normal paragraph text
    • The header-tagged text should include variations of the keywords that the page is trying to rank for

4. Main content (paragraph) put it in at least once when relevant.

    • This is the main content of your page; the paragraphs of information
    • Avoid shoving your paragraphs full of the keyword. "keyword stuffing" can hurt your ranking

5. Image Alt text & File name (can also help images rank well in image searches)

    • Images and files make your pages more engaging to users
    • Google can only see what your images are via the "alt text" so put relevant keywords in the alt-text of the images and files.

6. Anchor text (visible link text) (Internal links should include the linked pages keywords)

    • It is very important to include links in your pages to other pages.
    • The text that is clickable (includes a link) is called anchor text
    • The anchor text used to link to other pages should be a keyword for the page that it links to

The ideal keyword is a highly searched phrase with low competition. However, the most searched terms aren’t always realistic to rank for.

For example, "LED Lighting" likely has massive search volume but is dominated by industry giants like GE, making it nearly impossible to compete. Instead, we focus on highly searched variations with lower competition, such as:

  • Permanent LED Lighting
  • Permanent Christmas Lighting

Think Like a Searcher

If you had a question, how would you type it into Google?
Examples:

  • Christmas lights I don’t have to hang up myself
  • Who sells permanent Christmas lights?
  • My husband fell off the roof hanging Christmas lights

Keyword Variations Matter

Certain variations have different levels of competition:

  • Fell off the roof might have lower competition.
  • Christmas lights might be highly competitive, especially in peak season.

SEO & Conversions

SEO agencies often promise to rank you #1 for a term—but that’s meaningless if no one is searching for that term with the intent to buy. The real goal isn’t just ranking—it’s driving conversions (bid requests and sales). Always ensure your SEO efforts result in real business impact.

There are a number of websites that can help you research keywords.  However, there are some industry standards that we recommend.

  • SEMRUSH (website or plugin)
  • Keywords Everywhere
  • Keyword Planner through Google Ads
